Spider Leg Veins

Spider veins (telangiectasias) are damaged blood vessels that appear on the surface of your skin and often look red, blue or purple and may be sparse, webbed or branched in appearance. While harmless and not painful to touch, spider veins may still be unsightly – in many cases you won’t require treatment but in some instances removal may be desired.

Spider veins differ from varicose veins, which are large twisting veins that protrude and bulge from the surface of your skin. Varicose veins may be caused by age, gravity and genetics but also diseases, injuries or health conditions that strain vein walls causing spider veins. While most consider spider veins cosmetic issues only, for some they can be painful and indicate more serious health concerns.

Spider veins, like varicose veins, can be treated using various procedures. One popular technique is called sclerotherapy: injecting a chemical solution directly into an affected vein can cause its walls to contract and close off, redirecting blood flow away from its path and out of your system altogether. Sclerotherapy is effective against both spider and small varicose veins.

Other ways to lower your risk of spider veins include losing weight, wearing compression stockings and avoiding high heels. Wearing these stockings helps elevate legs while sitting or standing, improving circulation and preventing blood pooling in veins. Regular exercise can also provide benefits; if your job requires prolonged periods of standing up, take breaks every 30 minutes for walking around or doing calf raises or foot pumps to stay fit and reduce spider vein risk.

Cover-up products can be an easy and effective way to reduce spider veins’ appearance, coming in various shades to match any area affected. Simply apply with a sponge or makeup applicator directly over affected area – but keep in mind this won’t necessarily treat the cause; therefore it is wiser to consult a medical provider about any serious spider vein issues as soon as possible.
